In association with our sister organization A.C.E.S. North America we organizad
two medical operatives in 2007, with a team of 30 physicians, dentists, pharmacy
and support personnel. The first operative in June was for general and dental care
(see report here in Spanish), and the second one focused on women’s services
(see report here). In both activities general medical and dental care, family planning,
inoculations, pediatrics and pharmacy were offered. In total more than 1,000
medical services were provided and almost one million pesos (US$30,000) worth
of free prescriptions were distributed.
In addition and thanks to donations in the U.S.A. and to the shipment sent by A.C.E.
S. North America, 20 hospital beds were given to the local hospital, 6 wheelchairs
were given to an equal number of patients as well as a number of walkers. It is
hoped that similar shipments will continue in the future.
More importantly are the plans for a Women's Center in Las Terrenas. If funded the
center would provide not only basic preventive services, but also a whole line up
of educational, psychological and support services. A full description of the
proposal, including goals and objectives, appear here.
Volunteers with experience in this type of programs, or those with a background in
health or women's health, are invited to participate in the evolution of this project.
Our first task is to find and obtain funds to start operation. Initial funding was
secured from a previous volunteer and diagnostics among target audiences will
start in February of 2008.
