Pre-Departure Orientation Checklist
Please look up the list below and make sure that you're able to respond
adequately to each. If you have any questions or doubts please write to
correo@fundacionmahatmagandhi.com. We want you to be ready, we want
you to be well-prepared and we want you to have the best experience
possible. Pre-departure information here.
Organizational
___You know who we are, our mission and why we're doing what we're doing.
___You know where we're located, our target audiences and our previous actions.
___You've read our disclaimer and know what our potential and limitations are.
___You know that we see you as an empowered, self-managed participant in community service.
The Country and Town
___You've read enough to have a sense of the country, its people and its conditions.
___You have a sense of the beauty, rich diversity and cultural wealth of the country and its peoples.
___You know that you are coming to a small town, with limited infrastructure and facilities.
___You know that you will find poverty and striking differences when compared to other places.
Cross-cultural Transitions
___If you've travelled or lived abroad before, you're prepared to adjust to a new experience.
___If you have had limited experience abroad, you have done your homework to prepare yourself for the
transition experience.
___You know that there will be people around you ready to help you with adjustment.
___You have enough background information on country and culture to be somewhat prepared.
Documentation
___You have sent us your application form, your CV/resume, your photo and emergency contact info.
___You will provide us with a copy of your passport upon arrival, for security purposes.
___You left a copy of your passport (the personal ID page) with people/relatives back home.
___You have our contact information and know how other folks can get in touch with us.
Logistics
___You have the information you need about air and in-country transport.
___You've made decisions about lodging, food and local transport.
___If staying in Casa Paz, you know what it looks like and what it can offer.
___If staying elsewhere you have the basic information needed.
Medical
___You've made sure to have adequate medical coverage.
___You will come prepared to deal with insects and critters.
___You will take adequate steps to prevent painful and dangerous sunburn.
___You will bring what has helped you in the past in dealing with stomach/intestinal upsets.
Programs
___You are familiar with programs and program objectives.
___You are flexible and creative enough to participate in and influence our programs.
___You are willing to work as a team and as an individual to help foster our mission and objectives.
___You've chosen, from a universe of possibilities, what your personal contribution will be.
___You realize that the level of predictability is low and will be able to adjust accordingly.
Finances
___You've paid your housing deposit and program fee.
___You understand how the program fee is used.
___You understand that you can bring additional donations but that it is not required.
___You understand that we lack funds to help support volunteers.
___You understand that transport, lodging, medical and food are in addition to your program fee.
Clothing / Lifestyle
___You understand that this is tropical climate, generally warm/hot and very humid.
___You will dress comfortably but will be aware of local norms and standards.
___You understand that we do not promote alcoholism, the use of illegal drugs, the sexual abuse of minors or the
use of sexual workers.
___You realize that your behavior in town will be seen by most as an expression of FMG's values.
Safety and Security
___You will participate in FMG's local orientation and will pay heed to local conditions.
___You realize that you are primarily responsible for your own safety and security.
___You realize that this may be paradise but it is not exempt from real and potential dangers.
___You WILL make sure to know places and people that are key to your safety and security.
___You will keep FMG abreast of risks and/or perceptions of risk factors around you.
Personal Involvement
___You know about the minimum requirement of 20-30 hrs. a week.
___You know that you can work as much as you want beyond the 20-30 hours but it should pay attention to
library service as well as programs.
___You know about the need to have balance and to get to know the culture and the people.
___You know that your initiative, creativity and experience are valuable and needed assets for FMG.
