VOLUNTEER AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Spring 2006-2007
Overall Description
Short-term and long-term volunteers and interns (VIs) are needed in education, the
environment, youth, health, economic development and cultural development.
Volunteers and interns may work one on one or in group settings, facilitating training
and educational activities, and/or coordinating programs and activities.
Term of Service
Participation in volunteer and internship activities is ongoing throughout the year, from a
minimum of one week and up to two years.
Areas of Involvement
Regardless of length of time, VIs help achieve program goals and objectives by working
with community partners, managing service areas for targeted audiences in the
community and seeking out funds and resources to make the program sustainable and
effective. Program descriptions are as follows:
● Education programs provide support to existing educational institutions and aim
at broadening the educational scope of what's present in the community. You may be a
tutor or trainer in areas such as computer literacy, environmental education, geography
competencies, life skills, leadership development, academic support for K-12 learners
(literacy, math, sciences), literacy for adults, personal hygiene and personal growth.
● Environmental programs help produce change in three areas of personal
development: a) preservation, b) behavioral change, c) action. You may help prepare
monthly and annual events in barrios, schools or in the community in general. You will
help in establishing connections between personal and community responsibilities,
between personal life and nature as a whole. You may help in cleaning up creeks,
beaches, barrios, schools and in raising consciousness about the dangers of pollution
and the benefits of preservation.
● Youth programs help equip audiences with basic life-giving and life-enhancing
tools and knowledge, particularly in regard to personal health, social skills, leadership
and civic involvement and responsibility. Programs are developmental, with emphasis
on hands on practices and with a focus on activities that are age-relevant and
psychologically attractive. In particular, music, recreational and sport activities will be
used to attract and retain youth activities. You will work with youth one on one or in
groups, through sport clubs, churches, schools or through the media. Your musical
talents, organizational and leadership skills will help model positive practices.
● Health programs seek to provide support in specific life-cycle areas such as
pregnancy and maternal care, personal hygiene, HIV/AIDS/STD education, diet, family
dynamics and holistic medicine. You may work one on one, visiting homes and
schools, conducting training events or charlas (talks), give support to women's groups,
the public hospital and the schools.
● Economic development programs provide participants with basic knowledge and
skills in budgeting, economic planning, small business development, and skill-building
around specific crafts and skills. You would help facilitating training sessions,
assisting small businesses with basic management, accounting, purchasing and
budgeting practices.
● Cultural programs seek to benefit the community through cross-cultural activities,
multicultural development and global outlooks. Social and educational programs help
enhance the global and the local. Study abroad, international interns and educational
exchanges are long-term objectives. You will help create social activities to bring
together different groups from within Las Terrenas' ample array of nationalities,
language groups and cultural experiences. Movies, theater, library programs, reading
programs, nature activities, dances and the like are all suitable opportunities.
● Technical support. The Foundation could benefit from assistance in Web
development, fundraising, recruitment of Volunteers, public relations, digital media
production (flash, video, audio), radio, TV, newspapers, etc.
● Tutoring and Advance Literacy (in Spanish). You would assist with academic
development in specific subject areas for K-12; helping adults learn to read and write;
supporting library program training youth and adults on reading comprehension and
reading/writing skills.
● Tutoring and advance literacy (in English), you would support English learning
programs in private and public schools, providing support to English curriculum,
conducting support activities, enhancing language acquisition, helping completion of
homework.
● Conversational English (all academic levels and adults), you would conduct
tutorials and conversational groups for children, youth and adults; enhancing
conversational English skills for tour guides, tourist guides, hotel employees, citizens in
general with an interest in learning the language.
● Children and youth programs—you would help with summer camps, spring
camps, winter camps, start and upkeep hiking trails, create/organize/arrange for youth
activities, teaching kids how to swim, doing crafts, camps, team building, sports, caring
for the environment, home garden projects as well as school garden projects, teaching
specific crafts and manual skills (boys and girls), teaching the use of musical
instruments.
● Professional skills, you would help young adults and young professionals on
basic skills such as customer service, basic clerical skills, basic accounting, basic
budgeting, program planning and implementation, leadership for clubs and community
organizations, multicultural leadership, lifeguard training, CPR/first aid training, fire
department training, police training, waiter/waitress skills and training.
● Life skills, helping all population groups with training on personal habits,
personal hygiene, basic academic skills, learning how to learn, HIV/AIDS, STD training
and protection, learning a trade or craft; one on one, at schools, hospitals and
churches, or in training sessions.
● Landscaping and the environment designing, you would help create landscaping
projects around town, particularly flower gardens, reforestation, composting and home
gardening (vegetables).

Specialized Opportunities
1. Advanced Community Research Internship/Volunteer Program
The Advanced Community Research Internship/Volunteer program seeks to provide our
community with baseline research in targeted areas that are important for the history
and the evolution of our community. The program could benefit from empirical and non-
empirical methods, with special interest in creating an oral history of the community
seconded by basic statistical data not currently available.
At the present time there's nothing on the community, so interns/volunteers would work
on creating a body of knowledge, a toolbox of resources and would write results for
academic and non-academic settings. The writing may take place in either Spanish or
English, but translations into French, Italian or German would be very useful as those
are the larger communities represented in Las Terrenas.
The internship at this point would start with the basic steps in research design. Simple
research would be preferable (to be conducted within a 3-month time frame),
particularly when using surveys or conducting empirical methods or survey
instruments. The Oral History Project of Las Terrenas may take longer, but this initiative
aims at contacting, recording, transcribing and publishing the oral history of the place
from a variety of sources, particularly at a point in time when many of the "old folks" are
getting really old.
Program participants would enjoy living in such a beautiful community as Las Terrenas
even as they would be making a meaningful contribution to the present and future of the
community.

2. Summer Camps
An ambitious summer program seeks to provide children, youth and adults with
enriching events aimed at personal development in a number of areas. Non-
residential camps are planned in the arts (i.e., music, theater, painting), academic
areas (i.e., reading, math, information), social skills (i.e., leadership, self-esteem),
sports and recreation (i.e., mountain expeditions, camping, hiking, swimming, soccer),
and a variety of others such as flower arrangements, candle making, writing, poetry and
others. Adults could benefit from "talleres" (workshops) in a variety of subjects
including conversational English, internet navigation, basic computer skills, family
budgeting, civic involvement and many others.
Interns and volunteers would help coordinate, manage or facilitate some of the camps,
as well as help with logistics, planning and implementation. An important component
is monitoring and evaluation.

3. Chrysalis Project for Girls
The Proyecto Crisálida for girls in Las Terrenas is meant to strengthen self-esteem,
help girls with their changing anatomical and psychological nature, enhance motor
skills through recreation and sports and support their academic development through
academic enhancement workshops. Often girls get the short-end of the stick in
communities when limited resources provide limited recreational and educational
opportunities to early-teens and teens. The Proyecto Crisálida aims at providing girls
10-15 with key components in their social, physical and academic development,
providing them with tools to avoid self-destructive behaviors.
Interns and volunteers work either individually or in all-female teams, providing
workshops, camps and events targeted at each of the relevant areas of the programs.
You would get the opportunity to see lives transformed as you participate in the
transformation of these girls from despair to hope. The summer offers special
opportunities as many girls have basically nothing entertaining or productive to do, but
all activities are meant to continue during the school year depending on the level of
community support and resources (including interns and volunteers) that become
available.

4. The Butterflies Project for Teenage Girls
The Proyecto Las Mariposas for teenage girls 15-18 is meant to strengthen self-

Interns and volunteers work either individually or in all-female teams, providing
workshops, camps and events targeted at each of the relevant areas of the programs.
You would get the opportunity to see lives transformed as you participate in the
transformation of these girls from despair to hope, helping them avoid self-destructive
behaviors. The summer offers special opportunities as many teenage girls have
basically nothing entertaining or productive to do, but all activities are meant to continue
during the school year depending on the level of community support and resources
(including interns and volunteers) that become available.
Las Mariposas is a known term commonly used to refer to the Mirabal sisters,
assasinated during the Trujillo dictatorship because of their opposition to the regime. It
has also come to symbolize the struggle of all women to gain their due respect, regain
their self-respect and to pursue their dreams. This program is about helping teenage
girls become empowered—in their bodies, their minds and their future.

5. Youth Leadership Project
You will help establish leadership groups within the schools, helping form clusters of
self-identified subjects, or those identified by teachers and administrators; help conduct
team-forming events, including camping and outdoor events, helping groups with
ongoing support and guidance; and assisting in the implementation of community
projects that would youth become active participants in the bettering of the quality of life
in the community, as much as they help themselves in the process.
It is hoped that this leadership program will help create a body of youth leaders who
would then be involved in long-term community development activities throughout the
year.

Descripción General
L@s voluntari@s y pasantes ejercen sus funciones en educación, el
medio ambiente, juventud, salud, desarrollo económico y desarrollo
cultural, trabajan tanto individual como colectivamente, coordinando
actividades de capacitación y educativas, al igual que una variedad de
programas y actividades.
Tiempo de Servicio
Su participación en cualquiera de los programs y actividades puede ocurrir
durante cualquier parte del año, ya sea por un mínimo de una semana
hasta dos años.
Areas de Servicio
L@s voluntari@s y pasantes ayudan a implementar los blancos y objetivos
de los programas, trabajando con soci@s dentro de la comunidad,
coordinando áreas de servicio específicas para audiencias previamente
establecidas, al igual que ayudando a obtener los fondos y recursos
necesarios para hacer que los programas se realizen de manera efectiva y
sostenible. Las descripciones de algunos de los programas aparecen a
continuación, los cuales se prestan para corto o largo plazo:
● Programas educativos, proveyendo apoyo a las instituciones
educativas ya existentes dentro de la comunidad y buscando ampliar el
marco de lo que ya existe, en áreas tales como informática, educación
medioambiental, destrezas geográficas, destrezas en la vida diaria,
desarrollo de liderazgo, mejoramiento académico para educandos de
kinder a secundaria (alfabetización matemáticas, ciencias), alfabetización
de adultos, higiene personal y crecimiento personal.
● Programas medio-ambientales, ayudando a producir cambios en
tres áreas del desarrollo personal: a) preservación, b) actitudes, y c)
conductual (accionar). Eventos mensuales y anuales ayudan a mantener
una presencia permanente de la temática dentro de la comunidad a la vez
que se establecen conecciones entre la vida diaria y la mística de honrar la
tierra a través de una variedad de eventos.
● Programa Juveniles, ayudando a preparar jóvenes con el
conocimiento y las destrezas necesarias para preservar la vida,
particularmente en relación a la salud, las destrezas sociales, el liderazgo,
la participación cívica y la responsabilidad individual. Estos programas
enfocan, además, al desarrollo personal con énfasis en aspectos
prácticos de la vida, propios de la edad y sicológicamente atractivos.
● Programas de Salud, buscan proveer apoyo en áreas críticas del
desarrollo humano tales como embarazos, cuidado maternal, higiene
personal, HIV/SIDA, dieta, dinámica familiar y medicina integral.
● Programas de Desarrollo Económico, proveen a los participantes
con los conocimientos y destrezas necesarias en las áreas de
presupuesto familiar, planeamiento económico, micro-empresas y uso de
talentos personales relacionados con las artesanías.
● Programas Culturales, buscando beneficiar a la comunidad a través
de actividades culturales, del desarrollo multicultural y las visualizaciones
globales. Programas sociales y educativas promueven lo global dentro de
lo local. Otros objetivos persiguen atraer programas de estudios
universitarios desde el exterior, pasantes internacionales e intercambios
educativos internacionales.
● Apoyo técnico. La Fundación necesita asistencia con su página
Web, recaudación de fondos, promoción, reclutamiento de voluntarios,
relaciones públicas, producción digital (radio, televisión, flash).
● Tutorías Avanzadas en español. Assistiendo en el desarrollo
académico de niñ@s dentro del sistema primario y secundario (K-12), en
materias específicas; también ayudando a alfabetizar a adultos o
mejorando sus capacidades de lectura y escritura, al igual que lectura
comprensiva.
● Tutorías avanzadas en inglés, apoyando las clases formales de
inglés en las escuelas locales, dando apoyo al curriculum y facilitando la
acquisición y retención del idioma, al igual que ayudando con las
asignaciones escolares.
● Inglés conversacional (todos los niveles académicos y para
adultos), tutorías individuales y grupales, para niños, adultos y jóvenes.
Promoviendo mejor dicción, pronunciación y vocabulario para guías
turísticos, empleados de hoteles y ciudadanos en general con un interés
en mejorar su dominio del idioma.
● Programas juveniles e infantiles, campamentos durante todo el año,
planear y ejecutar actividades para niños y jóvenes (natación, senderismo,
artesanías, manualidades, trabajando en equipo, cuidando al medio
ambiente, hortalizas, música—coral e instrumentación).
● Destrezas profesionales, ayudando a profesionales jóvenes con
destrezas básicas dentro del ambiente profesional, como servicio al
cliente, archivado, uso del teléfono, principios de contabilidad, principios
de presupuesto, planeamiento y ejecución de proyectos, principios de
liderazgo, clubismo, primeros auxilios, CPR, entrenamiento a bomberos,
policía, defensa civil, meseros/as, y otras áreas de entrenamiento
relacionadas con el trabajo.
● Destrezas para la vida, hábitos personales, higiene personal,
destrezas académicas, aprendiendo a aprender, HIV/SIDA, enfermedades
transmisibles sexualmente, aprendiendo un oficio, y otros.
● Paisajismo y diseño ecológico, creando y ejecutando proyectos
paisajistas con un enfoque ecológico, jardines, reforestación,
compostando y hortalizas familiares.
Se puede ofrecer crédito académico a todo el que le interese por acuerdo
con las instituciones de donde provengan los pasantes.
Participación Especializada
1. Investigaciones Comunitarias y Proyecto de Historia Oral
Este proyecto busca proveer a la comunidad de investigaciones básicas,
enfocadas sobre aspectos del desarrollo social e histórico en la
comunidad. Métodos empíricos y no empíricos podrían ser de gran
utilidad dada la inexistencia de informaciones básicas en áreas claves del
desarrollo social, a la vez que existe una gran necesidad de establecer un
legado histórico basado en el haber oral entre los miembros de la
comunidad.
Actualmente no existe ningón tipo de trabajo investigativo, por lo que
pasantes y voluntarios trabajarían creando los basamentos, a manera de
caja de herramientas fundamentales, a la vez que comenzarían a
proporcionar trabajos eruditos o no para el haber académico. Escritos
podrían aparecer en cualquiera de los idiomas claves dentro de la
comunidad: español, francés, inglés, italiano y alemán.
El proyecto comenzaría con los estudios más fundamentales y con
proyectos de desarrollo que pudieran ser completados dentro de tres

2. Campamentos de Verano
Un ambicioso programa de verano busca proveer a niños, jóvenes y
adultos de ambos sexos con una variedad de eventos que contribuyan al
enriquecimiento personal. Campamentos diurnos se planean en las artes
(música, teatro, pintura), reforzamiento académico (lectura, matemáticas,
computadoras), desarrollo social (liderazgo, estima propia), deportes y
recreación (expediciones a las montañas, acampado, senderismo,
natación, balompié); al igual que muchos otros como arreglos florales,
manufactura de velas y velones, poesía y literatura.
Los adultos se beneficiarían de una variedad de talleres dirigidos al inglés
conversacional, navegando por el internet, destrezas básicas en la
computadora, presupuesto familiar, desarrollo cívico, liderazgo y otros.
Los pasantes y voluntarios ayudarían en la coordinación y manejo de los
eventos, dirigiendo áreas específicas dentro de los campamentos y
tomando responsabilidad por el éxito común.
Se podría ofrecer créditos académico con previa coordinación con el alma
mater.
3. Proyecto Crisálida Para Niñas de 10-15 años y
4. Proyecto Las Mariposas para Señoritas de 15-18 años.
Estos proyectos están dirigidos a fortalecer la estima propia, ayudar a las
niñas y señoritas con su desarrollo físico y emocional y a fomentar las
destrezas sico-motoras a través de los deportes y de la recreación sanas.
A la vez, se busca reforzar sus destrezas académicas por medio de
talleres de desarrollo académico. Muchas veces estas niñas y señoritas
no reciben apoyo ni recursos adecuados para fomentar un desarrollo
integral, además de que existen oportunidades limitadas para su
recreación. El Proyecto Crisálida busca entonces proveer a las niñas de
10-15 años con las herramientas básicas y especializadas para su
desarrollo físico, sicológico, intelectual y social integral, mientras que el
Proyecto Las Mariposas busca hacer lo mismo con las señoritas de 15-18
años. Así entonces se busca apoderarlas de su futuro a través del
conocimiento y de las herramientas necesarias para acquirir conciencia y
para actuar con sensatez.
Pasantes y voluntarios trabajarían en equipos totalmente femeninos,
proveyendo talleres, campamentos diurnos y eventos dirigidos a los
componentes básicas del programa (físicos, sociales, sicológicos,
conductuales, etc.). El verano ofrece oportunidades especiales ya que la
gran mayoría de estas jóvenes no tienen nada que hacer, pero se espera
que algunas de las actividades continúen el resto del año, dependiendo
de los recursos financieros y humanos que existan.
Estos proyectos prometen ser de gran satisfacción para los pasantes y
voluntarios, ya que la atención y cuidado otorgado a las niñas hará una
gran contribución a su desarrollo integral, su estima propia y su desarrollo
físico-sicológico. De esta manera se les estaría ayudando a evitar
conductas auto-destructivas y se les daría esperanza al sentar pautas para
un futuro diferente en sus vidas. Los proyectos Crisálida y Las Mariposas
buscan crear alternativas sociales y recreativas opuestas al no hacer nada
o al actuar destructivamente. Los pasantes y voluntarios tendrán la
oportunidad de ver vidas siendo transformadas al ofrecer la oportunidad
de cruzar el puente que lleva del desespero a la esperanza.
5. Proyecto de Liderazgo Juvenil
Voluntari@s y pasantes ayudarían a establecer grupos de líderes juveniles
en as escuelas, comenzando con aquellos que expresan interés y también
con aquellos que sean identificados por sus maestros y administradores.
Usted ayudaría con actividades de formación de equipos, incluyendo
campamentos y otras actividades al aire libre, proveyendo asistencia y
consejos y ayudando con proyectos comunitarios que faciliten un mayor
inmiscuimiento de los jóvenes en sociedad y en labores cívicas. Se
espera que este proyecto de liderazgo ayude a crear un cuerpo de líderes
jóvenes quienes se sientan motivados a participar en pgrograms de
desarrollo comunitario a largo plazo.

Descripción General
L@s voluntari@s y pasantes ejercen sus funciones en educación, el
medio ambiente, juventud, salud, desarrollo económico y desarrollo
cultural, trabajan tanto individual como colectivamente, coordinando
actividades de capacitación y educativas, al igual que una variedad de
programas y actividades.
Tiempo de Servicio
Su participación en cualquiera de los programs y actividades puede ocurrir
durante cualquier parte del año, ya sea por un mínimo de una semana
hasta dos años.
Areas de Servicio
L@s voluntari@s y pasantes ayudan a implementar los blancos y objetivos
de los programas, trabajando con soci@s dentro de la comunidad,
coordinando áreas de servicio específicas para audiencias previamente
establecidas, al igual que ayudando a obtener los fondos y recursos
necesarios para hacer que los programas se realizen de manera efectiva y
sostenible. Las descripciones de algunos de los programas aparecen a
continuación, los cuales se prestan para corto o largo plazo:
● Programas educativos, proveyendo apoyo a las instituciones
educativas ya existentes dentro de la comunidad y buscando ampliar el
marco de lo que ya existe, en áreas tales como informática, educación
medioambiental, destrezas geográficas, destrezas en la vida diaria,
desarrollo de liderazgo, mejoramiento académico para educandos de
kinder a secundaria (alfabetización matemáticas, ciencias), alfabetización
de adultos, higiene personal y crecimiento personal.
● Programas medio-ambientales, ayudando a producir cambios en
tres áreas del desarrollo personal: a) preservación, b) actitudes, y c)
conductual (accionar). Eventos mensuales y anuales ayudan a mantener
una presencia permanente de la temática dentro de la comunidad a la vez
que se establecen conecciones entre la vida diaria y la mística de honrar la
tierra a través de una variedad de eventos.
● Programa Juveniles, ayudando a preparar jóvenes con el
conocimiento y las destrezas necesarias para preservar la vida,
particularmente en relación a la salud, las destrezas sociales, el liderazgo,
la participación cívica y la responsabilidad individual. Estos programas
enfocan, además, al desarrollo personal con énfasis en aspectos
prácticos de la vida, propios de la edad y sicológicamente atractivos.
● Programas de Salud, buscan proveer apoyo en áreas críticas del
desarrollo humano tales como embarazos, cuidado maternal, higiene
personal, HIV/SIDA, dieta, dinámica familiar y medicina integral.
● Programas de Desarrollo Económico, proveen a los participantes
con los conocimientos y destrezas necesarias en las áreas de
presupuesto familiar, planeamiento económico, micro-empresas y uso de
talentos personales relacionados con las artesanías.
● Programas Culturales, buscando beneficiar a la comunidad a través
de actividades culturales, del desarrollo multicultural y las visualizaciones
globales. Programas sociales y educativas promueven lo global dentro de
lo local. Otros objetivos persiguen atraer programas de estudios
universitarios desde el exterior, pasantes internacionales e intercambios
educativos internacionales.
● Apoyo técnico. La Fundación necesita asistencia con su página
Web, recaudación de fondos, promoción, reclutamiento de voluntarios,
relaciones públicas, producción digital (radio, televisión, flash).
● Tutorías Avanzadas en español. Assistiendo en el desarrollo
académico de niñ@s dentro del sistema primario y secundario (K-12), en
materias específicas; también ayudando a alfabetizar a adultos o
mejorando sus capacidades de lectura y escritura, al igual que lectura
comprensiva.
● Tutorías avanzadas en inglés, apoyando las clases formales de
inglés en las escuelas locales, dando apoyo al curriculum y facilitando la
acquisición y retención del idioma, al igual que ayudando con las
asignaciones escolares.
● Inglés conversacional (todos los niveles académicos y para
adultos), tutorías individuales y grupales, para niños, adultos y jóvenes.
Promoviendo mejor dicción, pronunciación y vocabulario para guías
turísticos, empleados de hoteles y ciudadanos en general con un interés
en mejorar su dominio del idioma.
● Programas juveniles e infantiles, campamentos durante todo el año,
planear y ejecutar actividades para niños y jóvenes (natación, senderismo,
artesanías, manualidades, trabajando en equipo, cuidando al medio
ambiente, hortalizas, música—coral e instrumentación).
● Destrezas profesionales, ayudando a profesionales jóvenes con
destrezas básicas dentro del ambiente profesional, como servicio al
cliente, archivado, uso del teléfono, principios de contabilidad, principios
de presupuesto, planeamiento y ejecución de proyectos, principios de
liderazgo, clubismo, primeros auxilios, CPR, entrenamiento a bomberos,
policía, defensa civil, meseros/as, y otras áreas de entrenamiento
relacionadas con el trabajo.
● Destrezas para la vida, hábitos personales, higiene personal,
destrezas académicas, aprendiendo a aprender, HIV/SIDA, enfermedades
transmisibles sexualmente, aprendiendo un oficio, y otros.
● Paisajismo y diseño ecológico, creando y ejecutando proyectos
paisajistas con un enfoque ecológico, jardines, reforestación,
compostando y hortalizas familiares.
Se puede ofrecer crédito académico a todo el que le interese por acuerdo
con las instituciones de donde provengan los pasantes.
Participación Especializada
1. Investigaciones Comunitarias y Proyecto de Historia Oral
Este proyecto busca proveer a la comunidad de investigaciones básicas,
enfocadas sobre aspectos del desarrollo social e histórico en la
comunidad. Métodos empíricos y no empíricos podrían ser de gran
utilidad dada la inexistencia de informaciones básicas en áreas claves del
desarrollo social, a la vez que existe una gran necesidad de establecer un
legado histórico basado en el haber oral entre los miembros de la
comunidad.
Actualmente no existe ningón tipo de trabajo investigativo, por lo que
pasantes y voluntarios trabajarían creando los basamentos, a manera de
caja de herramientas fundamentales, a la vez que comenzarían a
proporcionar trabajos eruditos o no para el haber académico. Escritos
podrían aparecer en cualquiera de los idiomas claves dentro de la
comunidad: español, francés, inglés, italiano y alemán.
El proyecto comenzaría con los estudios más fundamentales y con
proyectos de desarrollo que pudieran ser completados dentro de tres
meses, particularmente a través de sondeos utilizando herramie ntas de
