VOLUNTEER AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Overall Description
Short-term and long-term volunteers and interns (VIs) are needed in
education, the environment, youth, health, economic development and
cultural development. Volunteers and interns may work one on one or in
group settings, facilitating training and educational activities, and/or
coordinating programs and activities.
Term of Service
Participation in volunteer and internship activities is ongoing throughout the
year, from a minimum of one week and up to two years.

Qualifications
● 18 yrs. Minimum.
● Good health.
● Experience and training in targeted area(s) preferable.
● College degree or college work a plus.
● Spanish language required for some areas.

them as we support their efforts to better their lives. Often, they are heroes
and heroines. You will be a hero/heroine too, as your energy, ability to listen
well, willingness to work and to provide a needed service, support or
encouragement will make a difference in their lives.
Culturally respectful. You will find yourself in the midst of a culturally-distinct
environment. Some things will be easier to understand than others, while
many other things will come across as puzzling at best, or nuisances at
worst. If you are willing to learn and to work on behalf of people who are
potentially very dissimilar to you, you will be much more successful if acting
in a respectful manner. We honor our clients as we preserve their humanity
and dignity in the manner in which we work. We expect our volunteers to do
the same.
Flexibility. Conditions may change constantly, needs and resources may
fluctuate daily, and keeping a flexible attitude will help you reduce
significantly your potential dissatisfaction with things beyond your control.
We cannot promise a perfect environment, nor one that fits your preferred
style of work, communication or personal relations.
Creativity. We like to foster a service learning environment in which creativity
can flourish. Different ideas are sought out and your views and experience
are assets to our organization. All we want is to keep our mission in mind
even as we pursue the rainbow of possibilities for carrying it out. And, by the
way, if you have a musical instrument, please bring it along too! And if you
are particularly talented in any aspect of the creative arts, please think about
sharing some of your talents with us during your stay.
Costs
● Monthly expenses may run up to US$1000 depending on housing
arrangements. Fees include lodging, three Dominican meals a day and
local transportation in moto-taxi when applicable. There are several
cellular phone companies in town as well as internet cafes, but these
expenses are not covered by program fees.
● Fees also include a) pre-departure orientation, b) cross-cultural
orientation upon arrival, c) on-site support, d) reentry orientation, e) local
airport (Las Terrenas) pick up, and f) intensive unstructured conversational
Spanish immersion.
● Fees do not include round-trip airfare, local transfers, visa or medical
insurance or coverage. International airports in the Dominican Republic are
Santo Domingo (SDQ), Santiago (STI) and Puerto Plata (POP) in addition to
La Romana and Punta Cana. There are small plane transfers available
from all or most airports to El Portillo airport in Las Terrenas. Fees do not
include in-country trips or tours, health coverage or extra meal and
expenses.
Your Experience With Us
● Prior to your arrival you would familiarize yourself with the Foundation
and the community, using the links provided on the Foundation's Website,
also by reading the program descriptions and service opportunities.
● You will be picked up at the local Las Terrenas airport, having traveled
from your home town to one of the international airport in the country.
Depending on your arribal time, you may need to spend your first night in
another town, awaiting your transfer by plane to El Portillo airport in Samana
Province and 5 minutes away from Las Terrenas. You have the option of
buying only one way as you may decide to return by bus or car. Assistance
on making the connections and finding local lodging will be provided.
● You will then be taking to your housing, which may be a home stay, an
apartment or volunteer housing.
● Within the following hours you would receive basic cross-cultural
orientation and almost immediately start your language immersion.
Participants staying for a month or longer will receive intensive
conversational language support, pairing up with a local person.
● You will then receive orientation to the specific program and service
opportunities available during your stay. How quickly you would start will
depend on your language skills, your adjustment after the trip and local
logistics. There's almost always some level of culture shock upon arrival
and shortly thereafter, and we will support you as you ready yourself for your
service.
Cultural Activities
● All volunteers staying for at least two weeks will benefit from one local
excursion (no more than one a month) from selected options that include a)
horse-back trip to the El Limon Waterfalls, b) humpback whale watching on
boat (Jan-Mar only), c) horseback ride, d) day-long trip by boat to Los
Haitises National Park, e) day-long trip to El Rincon Beach, f) day-long trip to
El Valle, g) hiking trips around nearby areas or any other suitable activity.
There are more than 20 miles of beaches surrounding the town, all of them
offering different settings and possibilities.
● The town itself offers a wide range of opportunities, such as weekly
dances at the local bars and restaurants (usually with no cover), which offer
great opportunities to see the local scene and practice or learn merengue,
bachata and salsa.
● There are excellent Italian, German, French, Japanese, Vasque,
Spanish and Dominican restaurants. If you like fish, you may go down to
the quaint and informal fishermen's wharf, pick up something from the
catch of the day and cook it at home! Dominican restaurants offer
dominican fare (chicken, beef or pork with rice and beans and a small sald)
for less than US$4, drinks extra.
● There are many crafts and painting galleries in town, from the very
quaint to the very fancy.
● From Las Terrenas you can take public transportation to anywhere in
the country and the Foundation staff will gladly help you plan any
excursions. The Dominican Republic offers a wide range of possibilities,
from the highest mountains in the Caribbean (Pico Duarte, 10,000 feet or
3,175 meters high), to the largest below-sea-level lake in the region (Lake
Enriquillo, where you may see crocodiles, flamingos, iguanas and dozens
of bird species, as well as mineral baths). Santo Domingo, the capital of
the country, is very vibrant and offers a wide variety of cultural choices,
museums, galleries, exhibits, colonial history, dances, music, theater and
much more.

Requisitos

● Título universitario sería muy ventajoso.
● Algunas áreas necesitarán conocimiento del idioma español.

podamos ofrecerles para ayudarles a mejorar sus vidas. Muy a menudo son
héroes y heroínas atrapados por la pobreza. Usted también se convertirá en un
héroe o heroína al compartir su energía, su capacidad de escuchar bién, de
ayudar, de compartir y de proveer un servicio, un apoyo o un simple abrazo. Cada
una de esas cosas puede aportar un gran cambio en la vida de muchas
personas.
Respeto Transcultural. Usted se encontrará rodeada de un ambiente
culturalmente distinto. Algunas cosas serán de mejor comprensión que otras,
mientras que algunas serán muy difíciles y hasta inaceptables. En todo ese
proceso, la experiencia será mucho más provechosa si usted se conduce en todo
momento de una manera respetable. Al trabajar a favor de todas las personas en
la comunidad queremos hacerlo manifestando dignidiad y respeto hacia todos.

Costs
● Su cuota mensual podría llegar a los US$1000 dependiendo de su
alojamiento. Su cuota cubre su alojamiento, tres comidas dominicanas al día y su
transporte local en moto-taxi de ser necesario. Hay varias compañías que ofrecen
cobertura de teléfono celular y en el pueblo hay varios internet cafés, pero su uso
no está incluído en su cuota mensual.
● Su cuota también incluye a) orientación previa a su salida, b) orientación
transcultural al llegar, c) asistencia durante su estadía, d) orientación para el

Transporte desde estos lugares hasta Las Terrenas por avión se ofrece en

Su Experiencia Con Nosotros
● Antes de su llegada estaría familiarizado con la Fundación y con la
comunidad, gracias a los documentos e información contenidos en nuestra
página Web y la lectura de documentos adicionales que se le proveean.
● Usted sería recogido en el aeropuerto local de Portillo en Las Terrenas,
habiendo llegado desde su hogar hasta uno de los aeropuertos internacionales
del pais. Dependiendo de su hora de llegada al pais puede que necesite
quedarse la primera noche en otro lugar, esperando su transferencia a Portillo, el
cual nos queda a 5 minutos de Las Terrenas. Usted tiene la opción de comprar
un boleto de ida solamente hasta Portillo y así podrá decidir luego si volar en
avioneta para su vuelo de retorno a su hogar, y si tomar transporte terrestre.
Estaremos a su disposición para ayudarle a definir sus conecciones y a localizar
un hotel después de su llegada al pais.
● Después de su llegada a Las Terrenas, será llevad@ a su alojamiento, ya
sea en casa de familia, apartamento o casa de voluntarios.
● En las horas siguientes usted recibirá orientación transcultural y casi
enseguida comenzará su práctica intensiva de español. Participantes que duren
más de un mes recibirán hasta dos semanas de apareamiento intensivo con otra
persona como tutor/a.
● Después recibiría orientación a su servicio específico, aparte de lo que haya
recibido previo a su llegada. Usted empezará su trabajo tan pronto se sienta
preparad@ para ello y una vez se sienta mejor ajustad@ en cuanto al idioma, la
cultura y las circunstancias locales. Casi siempre se experimenta algo de choque
cultural al llegar y por un tiempo, estaremos a su disposición para asistirle según
sea necesario.
Actividades Culturales
● Todos los voluntarios que permanecen con nosotros por dos semanas o
más tienen incluído en su cuota una excursión de su elección (los que duran más
tiempo reciben el beneficio de una excursión cada mes), entre las siguientes: a)
montar a caballo y viaje a la cascada de El Limón, b) ir a ver las ballenas
jorobadas (sólo de enero-marzo), c) montar a caballo por la playa, d) excursión al
parque nacional Los Haitises, e) viaje a la Playa Rincón, f) viaje a El Valle, g)
excursiones campestres a lugares cercanos, o alguna otra opción viable. Hay
más de 30 kms. de playas alrededor de Las Terrenas y cada una de ellas es
diferente.
● Las Terrenas misma ofrece otras oportunidades tales como bailes
semanales (sin costo de entrada), ofreciendo oportunidades de ver al público y de
practicar o aprender salsa, merengue o bachata.
● Hay restaurantes internacionales excelentes ofreciendo comida italiana,
alemana, francesa, japonesa, vasca, española y dominicana. Si le gusta comer
pescado puede ir a la parada de los pescadores locales, comprar pez fresco del
día y cocinarlo a su gusto. Los restaurantes dominicanos ofrecen plato del día (
pollo, res o cerdo, acompañado de arroz y habichuelas y una pequeña ensalada)
por menos de US$4, sin bebidas.
● Hay muchos talleres de artesanías y galerías de arte, desde las más
sencillas hasta las más sofisticadas.
● Desde Las Terrenas puede ir a cualquier otra parte del pais usando
transporte público o rentanto vehículos. La República Dominicana ofrece una
gran variedad de posibilidades, desde excursiones al pico más alto del Caribe
(Pico Duarte, 10,000 metros o 3,175 mts. de altura) hasta el lago más grande de
la región que está debajo del nivel del mar (donde puede ver cocodrilos,
flamencos, dozenas de aves, iguanas y manantiales minerales). Santo Domingo,
la capital, vibra de posibilidades tales como teatro, cines, museos, galerías de
arte, la zona colonial, bailes, y mucho más.

constante. Buscamos las ideas diferentes y sus puntos de vista, alimentados por
la multitud de sus experiencias, son bienvenidos y necesarios para nuestro
crecimiento organizacional. Mientras mantenemos nuestra misión en mente

Costs
● Su cuota mensual podría llegar a los US$1000 dependiendo de su
alojamiento. Su cuota cubre su alojamiento, tres comidas dominicanas al día y su
transporte local en moto-taxi de ser necesario. Hay varias compañías que ofrecen
cobertura de teléfono celular y en el pueblo hay varios internet cafés, pero su uso
no está incluído en su cuota mensual.
● Su cuota también incluye a) orientación previa a su salida, b) orientación
transcultural al llegar, c) asistencia durante su estadía, d) orientación para el
retorno, e) recogida en el aeropuerto local de El Portillo, f) conversaciones
intensivas no estructuras en español.
● Su cuota no incluye su boleto de vuelo ni las transferencias locales, aéreas
o terrestres, como tampoco su visa o cobertura médica. Los aeropuertos
internacionales en la República Dominicana están en Santo Domingo (SDQ),
Santiago (STI) and Puerto Plata (POP), además de La Romana y Punta Cana.
Transporte desde estos lugares hasta Las Terrenas por avión se ofrece en
pequeños aviones varias veces al día. Su cuota tampoco incluye excursiones
dentro del pais, seguro médico o comidas adicionales.
Su Experiencia Con Nosotros
● Antes de su llegada estaría familiarizado con la Fundación y con la
comunidad, gracias a los documentos e información contenidos en nuestra
página Web y la lectura de documentos adicionales que se le proveean.
● Usted sería recogido en el aeropuerto local de Portillo en Las Terrenas,
habiendo llegado desde su hogar hasta uno de los aeropuertos internacionales
del pais. Dependiendo de su hora de llegada al pais puede que necesite
quedarse la primera noche en otro lugar, esperando su transferencia a Portillo, el
cual nos queda a 5 minutos de Las Terrenas. Usted tiene la opción de comprar
un boleto de ida solamente hasta Portillo y así podrá decidir luego si volar en
avioneta para su vuelo de retorno a su hogar, y si tomar transporte terrestre.
Estaremos a su disposición para ayudarle a definir sus conecciones y a localizar
un hotel después de su llegada al pais.
● Después de su llegada a Las Terrenas, será llevad@ a su alojamiento, ya
sea en casa de familia, apartamento o casa de voluntarios.
● En las horas siguientes usted recibirá orientación transcultural y casi
enseguida comenzará su práctica intensiva de español. Participantes que duren
más de un mes recibirán hasta dos semanas de apareamiento intensivo con otra
persona como tutor/a.
● Después recibiría orientación a su servicio específico, aparte de lo que haya
recibido previo a su llegada. Usted empezará su trabajo tan pronto se sienta
preparad@ para ello y una vez se sienta mejor ajustad@ en cuanto al idioma, la
cultura y las circunstancias locales. Casi siempre se experimenta algo de choque
cultural al llegar y por un tiempo, estaremos a su disposición para asistirle según
sea necesario.
Actividades Culturales
● Todos los voluntarios que permanecen con nosotros por dos semanas o
más tienen incluído en su cuota una excursión de su elección (los que duran más
tiempo reciben el beneficio de una excursión cada mes), entre las siguientes: a)
montar a caballo y viaje a la cascada de El Limón, b) ir a ver las ballenas
jorobadas (sólo de enero-marzo), c) montar a caballo por la playa, d) excursión al
parque nacional Los Haitises, e) viaje a la Playa Rincón, f) viaje a El Valle, g)
excursiones campestres a lugares cercanos, o alguna otra opción viable. Hay
más de 30 kms. de playas alrededor de Las Terrenas y cada una de ellas es
diferente.
● Las Terrenas misma ofrece otras oportunidades tales como bailes
semanales (sin costo de entrada), ofreciendo oportunidades de ver al público y de
practicar o aprender salsa, merengue o bachata.
● Hay restaurantes internacionales excelentes ofreciendo comida italiana,
alemana, francesa, japonesa, vasca, española y dominicana. Si le gusta comer
pescado puede ir a la parada de los pescadores locales, comprar pez fresco del
día y cocinarlo a su gusto. Los restaurantes dominicanos ofrecen plato del día (
pollo, res o cerdo, acompañado de arroz y habichuelas y una pequeña ensalada)
por menos de US$4, sin bebidas.
● Hay muchos talleres de artesanías y galerías de arte, desde las más
sencillas hasta las más sofisticadas.
● Desde Las Terrenas puede ir a cualquier otra parte del pais usando
transporte público o rentanto vehículos. La República Dominicana ofrece una
gran variedad de posibilidades, desde excursiones al pico más alto del Caribe
(Pico Duarte, 10,000 metros o 3,175 mts. de altura) hasta el lago más grande de
la región que está debajo del nivel del mar (donde puede ver cocodrilos,
flamencos, dozenas de aves, iguanas y manantiales minerales). Santo Domingo,
la capital, vibra de posibilidades tales como teatro, cines, museos, galerías de
arte, la zona colonial, bailes, y mucho más.
