Sustainable Tourism
Invitation:  A Sustainable Future for Tourism in Las Terrenas

During the next 3-5 years organizations in the Dominican Republic organized  under the
umbrella of Tourism Clusters may receive up to five million dollars to be used in
organizational processes, in human resources (personal, technical and professional
development), in activities to preserve our natural and cultural resources as well as in
the production of promotional materials (internet, magazines, maps, flyers, posters, etc),
among others.

The funds will be made available by the USAID (U.S. Agency for International
Development), the Council on National Competitiveness (CNC) and administered through
the Dominican Sustainable Tourism Alliance (DSTA).  Additional resources from other
international agencies, the Dominican government and ONGs may also be available for
the same purposes.

Available funds may help realize the aspirations, past and present, of many people and
organizations in Las Terrenas, those who have seen their dreams limited by the lack of
resources, technical support and financing.

In order to benefit from available funds and technical support and to help transform its
tourist and development practices into more sustainable ones it is necessary for actors
and players in Las Terrenas to
  • be adequately informed
  • organize themselves, and
  • plan strategically
by means of participatory, transparent and effective processes.

To that end the Fundacion Mahatma Gandhi invites you to a meeting on
30th of April, at the Biblioteca Comunitaria Anacaona (Anacaona Library)
, Calle
Sánchez, Cándido’s Alley, in front of Josefina’s pre-primary school.

We invite business people, community organizations, neighborhood boards, churches,
community leaders, worker unions, worker associations, organizations of the civil
society and any other organization or individual interested in the outcomes of
sustainable tourism and development within the confines of the municipality.

Information will be disseminated during this meeting about the Tourist Clusters system, a
discussion will follow on the desired profile of a relevant community organization, and
initial steps will be taken toward strategic planning.

Please confirm your attendance by calling Jose Bourget, executive director of Fundacion
Mahatma Gandhi at 809.386.3086 or write to

Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs
while preserving the natural environment so that these needs can be met not only in the
present, but in the indefinite future. The term was used by the Brundtland Commission
which coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable
development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising
the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Sustainable Tourism
According to the World Tourism Association, sustainable tourism should:
1) Make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key element in tourism
development, maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural
heritage and biodiversity.
2) Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and
living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural
understanding and tolerance.
3) Ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio-economic benefits to
all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and income-
earning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to
poverty alleviation.

Putting together Sustainable Development and Sustainable Tourism we would achieve
three important results:
  • The protection and preservation of cultural and natural resources
  • Economic Growth
  • Social Equity
If you want to be a part of this pursuit please come to the meeting and bring others.
